![]() He said he was going to work on it but I haven't heard anything since. Hi All, What is the latest Nikon software for tethered shooting (to a laptop) Just transferring as you shoot and previewing Im currently using a D700, but the D810 is on the horizon. The creator was on here about a month ago asking what features people would like to see for AP and I told him that I'd like to be able to do away with DSLR Shutter. My D50s don't have live view so I can't comment on that function, but the histogram and zoom features work great for AP. Recently one (hopefully there will be more) inexpensive Nikon PC-tether software is made available: TetherProīut per website description, it seems not have been tuned for astrophotography applications yet. For Canon DSLRs, there are few very nice third party PC-tether software (BackyardEOS, APT, etc.) which are very well designed for astrophotography applications. To supplement Hilmi's description on early Nikon's, I'd like to add that in early Nikon days, the factory remote control software is unbundled and not free (actually quite expensive) when compare with Canon's free utility throw in by the factory. The software allows you to control any supported Nikon DSLR camera remotely from your Mac via USB. Thanks for Katie's description and very well balanced view. Sofortbild is a native macOS app for tethered shooting using Nikon DSLR cameras. Providing you know the limitations of the available interfacing software and the requirement to have an additional control (shutter) cable attached for exposures >30sec, the D3100 will serve you very well. I love my Nikons and the glass (I REALLY DO), but for astro.Canon.īottom line, if the D3100 is what you have then you can do some excellent astro work. Additionally, the bodies are easily modded for astro (internal filter removal/change). With the Canon, one cable does it all.įor me, IMHO, the Canon bodies with BackyardEOS is a perfect marriage for the astro shooter. MaximDL) that will use the normal USB connection communicate with the camera, and the second USB connection to control the shutter (greater than 30sec). For exposures longer than 30sec you will need a seperate bulb cable or Showstring adapter (a usb driven bulb cable). However, long exposures are not plug-n-play like the Canon. Your D3100 will work fine and exhibit very good noise characteristics (the D3100 is not one of the star eater models BTW and amp noise is low). Feel free to check the Nikon site for yourself to see which cameras can be supported in theory. We don’t know why that is the case, there’s no official information from Nikon regarding the topic. In short, I will never hang a Nikon on my scopes again. Nikon does not offer the library (also known as SDK) needed by developers like us in order to add support in Sofortbild. However, I purchased a Canon 450D (ebay) specifically for astro and run it with BackyardEOS. I have used the later Nikons successfully for astro with MaximDL and other capture programs (30sec or less shots). I own and use Nikon cameras - ranging from the D100, D200, D90, D90, and the D5100 (I also own lots of Nikor glass).
